A range of scales applies to most energy technologies, from the fundamental science underpinning them to the industrial-scale. Often these scales are considered in isolation. A new multi-scale approach is presented, which considers energy technologies holistically. It is applied to chemical looping combustion, a promising technology for carbon capture and storage. The approach gives valuable new insight into how chemical looping combustion could be optimised for industrial use.
