We describe a technique used to construct groups of type PSL in a finite exceptional group G(k) for a field k of suitable characteristic, and count the number of conjugacy classes. Under certain conditions, this gives information about the embedding for different fields.

We briefly show examples where this fails, and a different approach we used in such cases.
