The inclusion of design courses in university engineering programs has been increasing for some time, prompted in part by the design requirements in the ABET accreditation standards. However, the purpose, focus, and implementation of these courses vary widely by individual, institution and discipline. This talk will look at some of the common goals and strategies in design education with a focus on mechanical engineering. The differences and difficulties in design education for civil engineering will be discussed. Finally, the philosophy behind KAIST ’s new mandatory freshman design class ED100 : Introduction to Design and Communication and some of its early results will be presented.

This talk is part of the Engineering Department Structures Research Seminars series.
