The study of the top quark via pair production at the Large Hadron Collider very often relies on Monte Carlo simulations of final state events, whose accuracy is challenged by the outstanding precision of experimental measurements. I will discuss how to construct an exclusive event generator for top-quark pair production at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD combined with all-order parton shower simulations. I will discuss its application to LHC phenomenology as well as upcoming challenges on the path towards more accurate event generators.
