Abstract

A key focus for energy companies as they embark on their energy transition journey has been to assess their current emissions status, and develop methods by which they can cost-effectively reduce their emissions trends over time. Spun out of Caltech/JPL in 2017, SeekOps have taken a unique approach to the deployment of a self-contained and highly sensitive tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer, using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to capture the full three dimensionality of the emissions from industrial facilities. The presentation will describe the technology, its capabilities and limitations, and the unique methods by which individual emissions can be both localized and quantified, onshore and offshore using both quadrotor and fixed-wing beyond visual line of sight UASs.

In addition to describing progress within oil and gas operations, the presentation will also highlight the business drivers and specific idiosyncrasies of surveying industrial facilities in the biogas/renewable natural gas markets, and how the technology can also be used to monitor temporal emissions from the continually evolving topology of landfill sites. Progress in each market will be highlighted with videos from field operations.

Finally, as the company has started its expansion out of North America into Western Europe and the Middle East, the presentation will highlight how the company evolved from its two founders at JPL , the role early customers played, and why an all-strategic corporate venture-backed investment round was selected as the most appropriate mechanism to achieve rapid growth in this dynamic market, where there are significant pressure for companies to raise the visibility of their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) scores.

About the speaker

Iain Cooper is the CEO at SeekOps Inc, based in Austin, TC, USA , which proves the energy industry with reliable, accurate and timely emissions detection, quantification and reporting. He was previously with Schlumberger for 28 years, lastly managing their Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) activity, which he helped found in 2008, investing in more than 20 companies, three of which are currently valued at over $1Bn. Prior to his role managing Schlumberger’s CVC group he was Global Product Development Manager for their Well Services division, and also previously Research Director for Drilling. Iain co-authored and edited the Textbook on ‘Advanced Drilling & Well Technology’ for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and has 26 granted US patents in a range of oilfield technologies.

He is on the advisory board at Nauticus Robotics Inc, an Ocean robotics company, and on the Board of Directors of Jacobi Motors Inc, an electric vehicle motor start-up. Iain is a Chartered Scientist, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He holds a PhD in Meteorology, as well as a degree in Mathematics and Physics.
