DY2W03 - Modeling, observing and understanding flows and magnetic fields in the Earth's core and in the Sun

The strength of the geomagnetic field has decreased rapidly over the past two centuries, coinciding with an increasing field asymmetry due to the growth of the South Atlantic Anomaly. Here, I will present a new geomagnetic field model based on archaeomagnetic and sedimentary palaeomagnetic data over the past 9000 years that shows quasiperiodic variations in the dipole moment that are linked to similar (recurrent) East-West field asymmetries. I will also show new analyses of independent cosmogenic radionuclide records that both support these observations and provide new information on North-South asymmetries in the geomagnetic field.
