This symposium will explore key factors affecting musicians’ musical and professional identities as they evolve through the critical phase of study in a conservatoire. Research evidence relating to professional aspirations, motivation and prior learning will all be addressed, and the relationship between them considered. Presenters come from the UK, the Netherlands and Australia. Their work will be used to stimulate discussion around curricula and their delivery in educating and training professional musicians.
