We will begin by outlining how symplectic topology can help us to understand families of smooth algebraic varieties and conclude by illustrating this philosophy in cases where it works well, including low-rank Del Pezzo surfaces and A_n-Milnor fibres. This week’s talk is brought to you by the number 4 and the theory of pseudoholomorphic curves.
