Historic masonry structures are vulnerable to earthquakes, but their seismic assessment remains a challenge. Furthermore, the three-dimensional stability of vaulted masonry structures remains difficult to model. Analytical modelling and discrete element modelling techniques will be presented which can be used to understand stability and predict dynamic response. Results are evaluated through comparison with scale model testing. The presented modelling strategies could allow more effective assessment and retrofit of historic masonry structures.
