Mathematical and Statistical Approaches to Climate Modelling and Prediction

Data assimilation (DA) has not been used in climate studies anything like to the extent it has in weather prediction. I will discuss whether this is likely to change and argue that DA has a lot to offer climate research, particularly when cast in a Bayesian framework. Motivating examples from paleoclimate and ocean studies will be given that will serve to outline the major challenges arising in DA when it is used to tackle climate prpoblems.
