A large number of dynamical properties are known to hold in each direction in the Z^d action generated by d commuting maps. I will report on joint work with Richard Miles concerned with understanding whether there are uniformities in these phenomena as the direction changes. A general picture emerges showing that even in the simplest (or most hyperbolic) situations one is almost inevitably forced to deal with subtle Diophantine questions to establish this uniformity.
