Lagrangian cobordisms are natural relations between Legendrian submanifolds, arising from studying Lagrangian submanifolds in the symplectisation of a contact manifold. These relations strengthen the importance of contact geometry in low dimensional topology as they can be used in some cases to compute 4-dimensional smooth invariants of knots. Moreover, Legendrian contact homology is functorial under Lagrangian cobordism. In this talk, we will discuss both of these applications and provide examples in each case.
