"Proton Therapy: Particle physics fights cancer"

Radiotherapy, using electron accelerators to produce beams of X rays to treat tumours, is well established and very effective in many cases. But proton and heavy ion accelerators can also be used, targeted directly and with high precision onto the tumour, maximising the damage to it while minimising that to healthy tissue.
