Mathematics and Applications of Branes in String and M-theory

The six-dimensional (2,0) M5-brane CFT was recently conjectured to be obtainable as the strong-coupling limit of five-dimensional, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In this talk we will first review the arguments leading to this claim. We will then present new evidence in its favour through the study of the M2/M5 bound state, which provides an M-theoretic realisation of the Myers brane-polarisation effect.
