Reading and Reception Studies Seminar at Clare Hall

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 8 March 2012, 5.00-7.00pm when Professor David Baguley will be reading his paper entitled ‘Zola’s War and Peace: On La Débâcle’. Prof. Baguley’s paper will be followed by questions and discussion, and the meeting will conclude with a glass of wine/juice at 6.45pm.

Registration is not required, and the event is free and open to all.

La Débâcle was Zola’s most successful novel from the time of its publication (1892) and for several years thereafter. This talk will explore the complex generic process of its creation, examine its themes and techniques, and assess its originality and its contribution to the genre of the war novel.

David Baguley is Emeritus Professor and Adjunct Professor in the French Department of the University of Western Ontario and Emeritus Professor and Honorary Research Fellow of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University. He has published and edited several books, notably the 11th volume of Emile Zola: Œuvres complètes: La Fortune d’Octave Mouret, 1882-1883: présentation, notices, chronologie et bibliographie (Nouveau Monde, 2005), Napoleon III and His Regime: An Extravaganza (Louisiana State University Press, 2000) and Le Naturalisme et ses genres (Paris: Nathan, 1995). He is also the author of numerous articles, mainly in the field of nineteenth-century French literature, culture and history, with special reference to the works of Emile Zola and the Naturalist movement.
