Imprinting magnetic monopoles onto an atomic gas

A point source of magnetic flux, a magnetic monopole has long been an important missing component of the grand unified theories of physics. We show how an analogy to just such a magnetic monopole can be introduced into a gas of ultracold atoms and study their resultant behaviour.
