t is well known that holomorphic cycles minimize volume in their homology class in a compact Kahler manifold. I will quickly review some classical results about the attempt of proving the converse both in the positive (Siu-Yau, Lawson-Simons) and some negative constructions.

I will present a new approach, and an extension of this classical problem which generates a new variational problem whose associated functional identifies (pseudo-)holomorphic cycles. Joint work with J. Sun.
