Given a chain complex C and a subcomplex C’, there is a long exact sequence which can be used to compute H(C ), the homology of C, in terms of H(C’) and H(C/C’). Generalizing, we can replace C and C’ with a “filtered chain complex”, and the long exact sequence with a “spectral sequence”, which assists in computing the homology of the filtered chain complex. The aim of the talk is to explain what these spectral sequences are, and to give an idea of their usefulness throughout mathematics.

This talk is part of the Junior Algebra and Number Theory seminar series.
