Beginning with an overview of Lesson Study and its over 100-year history in Japanese teacher professional development, Dr. Hiroyuki Kuno details the basic process and benefits of Lesson Study, and shows two concrete examples from Japanese primary school lessons for an in-depth understanding of the practice and how it can benefit teachers through school-based collaborative professional development and student-centered lesson development. Lesson Study is significant school-based step by step development practice, and much more than just “A Useful Tool for Teacher Professional Development”: it is a challenge for changing teachers’ mindsets and in turn creates a stronger learning culture in schools.
