With many of difference equations one can associate a superior discrete integrable system closely related to Yang-Baxter maps. This association turns out to be helpful in understanding some correspondences (multivalued recurrences) that are consistent-around-the-cube. Moreover, the standard procedure of periodic reductions leads not only to Painlev equations but also to their multivalued generalizations.
