Underground laboratories are having a key role in understanding rock properties, especially with regard to groundwater flows and compositions, solute transport, and rock mechanics, that impact on the feasibility and long term safety of geological disposal of nuclear wastes. In this talk, I’ll focus on a selection of these facilities, in Sweden, Switzerland and France, and will talk about their significance for geological disposal and more widely in geoscience.
