One can consider algebraic groups as functors from the category of rings to the category of groups, for instance the functor SL_n sends a ring R to the group SL_n®. In this talk we will expand on this basic viewpoint to talk about affine groups. We will realize affine groups as group schemes, and see a theorem classifying when such a group is smooth.

This talk is part of the Junior Algebra and Number Theory seminar series.
