Black holes as gravity laboratories

I will argue that black holes can act as natural laboratories for the gravitational interaction and for distinguishing between general relativity and alternative theories. In order to support this claim, I will consider black holes in scalar-tensor gravity and in Lorentz-violating theories as characteristic examples.
