I will report on joint work with Frdric Rochon and David Sher on the analytic torsion of spaces with hyperbolic cusps and spaces with non-isolated conic singularities. In either case, by understanding the precise asymptotics of the heat kernel of a degenerating family of closed manifolds, we are able to establish a topological formula for the analytic torsion extending the Cheeger-Muller theorem.
