The nature, origin, and evolution of our species are fundamental themes of human existence. In this talk, I will summarize current paleoanthropological and archaeological research into the origins and evolution of Homo sapiens, providing an overview of the early biological and cultural trajectories of our species. I will argue that a joint bio-cultural perspective is the way forward in understanding the human story, providing an example from my own research.
