HTLW02 - 3-manifold workshop The Temperley-Lieb category appears in a fundamental way in both the study of subfactors and in link homology theories. Indeed, the discovery of the importance of the Temperley-Lieb category for subfactors led to the creation of the Jones polynomial, and thence, after a long gestation, Khovanov homology.
