I will first review the conjectured instability of AdS spacetime in classical general relativity. I will then describe a recent breakthrough on this problem which was just very recently obtained here in Cambridge by a graduate student, Georgios Moschidis, who has proven this instability in the setting of the Einstein-null dust system under spherical symmetry, with an additional inner mirror. This is the simplest setting where the problem can be posed and gives hope that a definitive resolution of the conjecture will be obtained.
