Detecting and monitoring disease outbreaks and epidemics using publicly available information sources (social media, blogs, news, forums, etc.) brings with it many technical challenges. In this talk, I will focus on the geographical aspect of information retrieval, outline the main hurdles and present a new computational method, which has been accepted to http://www.acl2017.org. I will also talk about some applications of this knowledge in future work. Some knowledge of computational linguistics is required to make the most of this talk.

This talk is part of the Language Technology Lab Seminars series.
