Birational classification of Fano 3-folds, post MMP , remains a challenging problem in modern geometry. I will talk about the foundations of this problem and lay out a suggestive programme for such classification. This programme involves various questions on birational rigidity and irrationality of 3-folds. I will connect some of the known conjectures, which sit naturally in this programme, with new (stable) irrationality results.
