ABSRTACT - Generalised continua are characterised by degrees of freedom which go beyond a displacement field. A unified formulation of Cosserat, micromorphic, and higher gradient continua is presented. The unified treatment overcomes difficulties when considering inelastic material behaviour for such continua. The choice of strain measures, the resulting field equations, as well as the numerical treatment of extra degrees of freedom are discussed. Specifically the treatment of rotations is considered in depth. Various applications to shell dynamics and examples of scale effects are presented.
