The Cambridge University German Society warmly invites to our second Speakers Event of Michaelmas Term!

Christoph Lieben-Seutter is the General and Artistic Director of the historic Laeiszhalle and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. His responsibilities include directing the artistic content of both venues.

Lieben-Seutter was born in Vienna in 1964. After leaving school, he worked in the computer industry for a number of years. In 1988, he was hired by Alexander Pereira as Management Assistant at the Vienna Konzerthaus, where he subsequently became Chief Operating Officer in 1991. In 1993, when Pereira left to become the Director of Zurich Opera House, Lieben-Seutter followed him as his Assistant, before being asked back to Vienna in 1996 to become Director of the Konzerthaus and the Wien Modern Festival. For the next eleven years, Lieben-Seutter was responsible for 450 events per season. He was able to engage new audience segments and helped the Vienna Konzerthaus to acquire a lasting reputation as one of the leading international organisations for classical concerts.

In September 2007, Lieben-Seutter accepted the new position of General and Artistic Director of the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle Hamburg. He oversaw the preparations leading up to the opening of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in January 2017. Now entering his eleventh season as General and Artistic Director of both venues, Lieben-Seutter’s contract has been extended until summer 2021. He is also a member of the board of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.

At our event, Lieben-Seutter will give a talk about: ‘Hamburg Reimagined: How the Elbphilharmonie Transformed the Merchant’s City into a Cultural Top Destination’

There will also be time for questions. Please note that the event will be held in English. All welcome!

Due to our restricted room capacity, we encourage you to arrive early in order to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you there!
