DESCRIPTION:In this talk we shall discuss our recent result wh
ich establishes that the Schwarzschild family of b
lack holes are linearly stable as solutions to the
Einstein vacuum equations when expressed in a gen
eralised wave gauge: all sufficiently regular solu
tions to the system of equations that result from
linearising the Einstein vacuum equations\, as exp
ressed in a generalised wave gauge\, about a fixed
Schwarzschild solution decay at an inverse polyno
mial rate to the sum of a residual pure gauge and
linearised Kerr solution. The result thus compleme
nts the recent seminal paper of Dafermos—Holzegel—
Rodnianski in a similar vein as to how the work of
Lindblad—Rodnianski complemented that of Christod
oulou—Klainerman in establishing the nonlinear sta
bility of the Minkowski space.
