DESCRIPTION:Entropy inequalities are linear inequalities relat
ing the von Neumann entropies of different overlap
ping marginals of a quantum state. These inequalit
ies are a mathematical consequence of the postulat
es of quantum mechanics and are an indispensable t
ool in quantum information science. All (unconstra
ined) entropy inequalities we know today follow fr
om the celebrated strong subadditivity of quantum
entropy and it is a major open problem to prove an
unconstrained entropy inequality that is independ
ent of strong subadditivity.\nIn this talk I will
present a novel approach to prove entropy inequali
ties based on recent developments on trace inequal
ities. This approach can be used to prove all entr
opy inequalities we currently know in a unified wa
y. Furthermore\, it could be a useful tool in prov
ing the first unconstrained entropy inequality tha
t does not trivially follow from strong subadditiv
ity.
