DESCRIPTION:Motivated by the observation that outliers appear
to occur more frequently in QMC results than in st
atistics from other sources\, I will present an in
vestigation into factors influencing the distribut
ion of results.\n\nFirst\, we examine uncertainty
in the correlation length and show that this serve
s to increase the probability of observing energie
s more than one error bar from the mean. We then e
xtend the work to non-Gaussian distributions of lo
cal energies and show that this exacerbates the ef
fect. We will touch briefly on the analogue of the
central limit theorem that is applicable.\n\nThe
talk will finish with a comparison between the pre
dictions of this simple theory and real variationa
l Monte Carlo data.
