DESCRIPTION:Optimization is\, simply put\, the science of find
ing the best solution amongst many feasible altern
atives for general decision making problems. Ever
y engineer and scientist will most certainly have
encountered optimization in some form or another:
from parameter estimation and model fitting\, to e
xperiment design\, and to more advanced uses\, suc
h as optimising processes and plant flow sheets\,
and more.\n\nA brief search through the Web will v
erify that there is an enormous volume of publicat
ions and books on the subject\, regarding both app
lications and theoretical developments. There is
no doubt that optimization theory can be very diff
icult to grasp\, if looked at the level a mathemat
ician would use to develop a mathematical proof.\n
\nHowever\, this is not the intent of this present
ation. The aim is to present optimization as an i
ndispensable tool in modern engineering science. T
he intended audience is anyone interested to learn
about optimization: where it can be applied in ou
r discipline\, how to formulate appropriate models
\, and where the state-of-the-art has reached with
modern solver codes. \n\nThe level is such that
the presentation will be accessible to undergradua
te students at any year of the Tripos\, whilst pre
senting the topic in a way that is useful to resea
rchers as well. There will be no complex mathemat
ics\, but some equations will be used: basic algeb
ra\, basic calculus and a lot of common sense! Mo
st of the ideas presented will be highlighted by a
pplications in Chemical Engineering.\n
