DESCRIPTION:Nest building is widespread across bird species. A
lthough it has generally been assumed to be unaffe
cted by learning\, this has rarely been tested. He
re I present experiments investigating what role l
earning may play in nest building behaviour in zeb
ra finches\, in both adults and young birds. I als
o present results from an experiment addressing wh
ether birds were able to select material appropria
te for a nest building 'task'\, using a similar de
sign to that used in some experiments on tool-use
in animals. Taken together\, my results show evide
nce for a role of cognition in nest building: expe
rience changes zebra finches’ preferences for nest
materials and they are also able to select materi
als appropriate to the conditions under which they
are building. There appears to be at least some
similarity between these results and the data on t
 ool use.
