DESCRIPTION:The talk will concern an aspect of the representat
ion theory of Lie groups motivated by applications
to bounds for period integrals. \n\nI will introd
uce a notion of a vector in an irreducible unitary
representation being "localized". I will then ple
ad the case that this definition is interesting. \
n\nFor example\, recall that Schur's lemma says th
at the equivariant operators on an irreducible uni
tary representation are constant multiples of the
identity. I will describe an asymptotic classifica
tion of "approximately equivariant" operators when
restricted to localized vectors. \n\nI will indic
ate some applications of this simple-sounding resu
lt\, particularly to establishing the invariance o
f certain limiting measures that arise in semiclas
sical analysis and number theory. \n\n
