DESCRIPTION:Mumford's geometric invariant theory (GIT) provide
s a method for constructing (projective completion
s of) quotient varieties for linear actions of com
plex reductive groups on affine and projective var
ieties\, and has many applications (for example in
the construction of moduli spaces in algebraic ge
ometry). Mumford's GIT can be extended to actions
of linear algebraic groups which are not necessari
ly reductive\, but many of the nice properties bel
onging to reductive GIT no longer hold for non-red
uctive actions. The aim of this talk is to describ
e conditions under which these properties still ho
ld for suitable non-reductive actions\, and to dis
cuss some applications\n
