DESCRIPTION:The walls of the Alhambra in Grenada are covered i
n a cascade of different colours and shapes. But t
hrough the mathematician's glasses there are only
17 different symmetries possible on the palace wal
ls. What does it mean for two totally different im
ages to have identical symmetries? Mathematics is
full of different ways of looking at the world whe
re seemingly different objects become identical un
der the mathematicians microscope. Equations too r
epresent a dialogue between the right and left han
d side of the equals side where the mathematics ma
gically transforms one idea into an often seemingl
y unrelated idea. Yet the logical proof behind the
equation reveals an identity between the two conc
epts.
