DESCRIPTION:From Isaac Newton onwards\, Cambridge has been ass
ociated with some of the most famous mathematician
s in history. Modern mathematicians and theoretica
l physicists work on everything from the Big Bang
to number theory\, from geometry to modelling the
shrinking of Arctic sea ice\, exploring quantum in
formation or understanding how disease epidemics s
pread.\n\nJoin volunteer staff and students from t
he Faculty of Mathematics to share the excitement
of the subject through hands-on activities\, games
and demonstrations (featuring everything from Leg
o epidemics to the mathematics of image processing
!) for visitors of all ages from 8 through to adul
t.\n\nThe Maths Public Open Day also offers a very
rare opportunity to explore inside the fluids dyn
amics laboratory hidden beneath the lawn of one of
the most beautiful modern buildings in Cambridge.
Hands-on fluids activities and demos will explore
some of the areas on which Cambridge applied math
ematicians work.\n\nThe Maths Cafe will be open th
roughout the event\, serving tea\, coffee\, soft d
rinks\, snacks\, cakes and sandwiches.\n\nThis eve
nt is part of the 2017 Cambridge Science Festival.
No booking needed - drop in throughout the event
(12 noon - 4pm).\n\nSee https://maths.org/events f
