I will discuss my recent work with V. Iskovskikh on elements of finite order in the Cremona group of birational automorphisms of the projective plane over an arbitrary perfect field K (in algebraic terms this is the group of automorphisms of the field of rational functions in two variables with coefficients in K). Special interesting cases are the cases when K = Q or a finite field.
