One of the most useful tools we have for determining the decomposition numbers of the symmetric group is the study of Schaper’s filtration of the Specht modules. This filtration gives rise to a sum formula analogous to the famous Jantzen sum formula. This formula gives an upper bound on the decomposition numbers, as well as determining precisely which are zero. In this talk we will try to better understand the layers of this filtration, which will improve the upper bound given by the formula.

This talk is part of the Junior Algebra and Number Theory seminar series.
