Random Caching Based Transmission in Ultra-Dense Wireless Networks

Base station cooperation in ultra-dense (heterogeneous) networks (UDN) is a promising approach to improve the network performance, but it also poses a significant challenge for the backhaul. One effective way to reduce backhaul loading in UDN is to cache some popular files at small base stations (SBS). In the first part of this presentation, we propose an SBS cooperative transmission scheme under random caching at SBSs with the caching distribution as a design parameter. Using some tools from stochastic geometry, a tractable expression for the successful transmission probability (STP) is derived and then optimised. Compared with some existing caching designs, the optimal random caching approach achieves an all-round better STP performance. In the second part of this presentation, we consider retransmission with random discontinuous transmission (DTX) in cache-enabled UDN . By analyzing the STP in the high-mobility and static scenarios, closed-form expressions for the STP are established, showing that (1) a larger caching probability corresponds to a higher STP in both scenarios; and (2) random DTX does improve the STP in the static scenario but its benefit gradually diminishes when mobility increases.

BIO: Fu-Chun Zheng obtained the BEng (1985) and MEng (1988) degrees in radio engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and the PhD degree (1992)in Electrical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh, UK. From 1995 to 2007, Dr Zheng was with Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, as a lecturer and then an associate professor in mobile communications. In 2007, he became the Chair of Signal Processing at the University of Reading, UK. He has also been a distinguished adjunct professor with Southeast University, China, since 2010. He is currently with Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), China and the University of York, UK. He has been awarded two prestigious UK EPSRC Visiting Fellowships – both hosted by the University of York (UK): first in 2002 and then again in 2006.

Over the past two decades, Dr Zheng has also carried out many government and industry sponsored research projects – in Australia, the UK, and China. He has been both a short term visiting fellow and a long term visiting research fellow with British Telecom, UK. Dr Zheng’s current research interests include green communications, ultra-dense networks and machine learning based resource allocation.

Dr Zheng has been an editor or guest editor for several international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Communications Magazine, and Science China – Information Sciences. In 2006, he served as the general chair of IEEE VTC 2006 -S (Melbourne, Australia: www.ieeevtc.org/vtc2006spring) – the first ever VTC held in the southern hemisphere. More recently, he was the executive TPC chair for IEEE VTC 2016 -S (Nanjing, China: www.ieeevtc.org/vtc2016spring) – the first ever VTC in mainland China.
