Consumer confidence rises 1.3 points in April after three months of declines

Consumer confidence rose 1.3 points in April compared to the previous month , reaching 99.9 points. This was due to the better assessment that citizens make of the current situation and the maintenance of their expectations. These are data published this Thursday by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS). With the April rebound, consumer confidence ends a streak of three consecutive months of declines that brought the indicator to its lowest level since February 2017 . Although it is already close to 100 points, consumer confidence chains three months below this figure . Above it, consumer perception is considered positive, while below it is understood as negative. Of the two indicators that make up the consumer confidence index, the current situation indicator was the only one that registered progress in April . Since the expectations remained unchanged compared to March, anchored at 107.2 points. The expectations of citizens The stability of citizens’ expectations is the result of a 3.3 point increase in the assessment of the future evolution of the economy. From the decreases in employment expectations (-2.6 points). And on the future situation of households (-0.6 points). For its part, the current situation indicator increased 2.6 points in the fourth month of the year, standing at 92.7 points. This was as a consequence of the positive behavior of its three components (general economic situation, valuation of the labor market and household situation). Thus, according to the CIS , the assessment of the general evolution of the economy advanced 3.3 points ; that of the labor market improved 3.2 points, and that of households grew 1.2 points. However, comparing the data for April of this year with that for the same month in 2017, the evolution of consumer confidence drops by 6.8 points . With a decrease in absolute terms for the assessment of the current situation of 7.7 points and 5.9 points in the case of expectations. The ICC collects monthly the assessment of recent developments and the expectations of Spanish consumers related to the family economy and employment, with the aim of anticipating their consumption decisions.
