The promises of the vulgate of the invisible hand have failed Main Street. In this presentation, I will return to some of my recently published work to think more broadly about the benefits and the fears elicited by the paper economy in pre-Adam Smith Europe, when new and newly accessible credit instruments rendered financial transactions materially invisible and inscrutable to most.
