GR2W01 - Counting conjectures and beyond

Originally motivated by the McKay Conjecture, over the last few years I have been interested in studying the restriction of irreducible characters of finite groups to Sylow subgroups. In this talk I will mention how this topic played a central role in the proof of a conjecture formulated by Malle and Navarro in 2012. This result is contained in a very recent joint work with Stacey Law, Jason Long and Carolina Vallejo. In the second part of the talk I will focus on symmetric groups. In particular, I will describe some new results concerning restriction of characters to Sylow subgroups in this context. This part of the talk is based on joint work with Giada Volpato.

This talk is part of the Isaac Newton Institute Seminar Series series.
