Abstract
I will introduce the classical optimal control problem, due to Zermelo, of a boat navigating in a wind so as to reach a given point in the minimal time. I shall present a solution, due to Shen, which maps the problem to the study of a Finsler geometry related to charged particle motion in a magnetic field. I will then demonstrate how these two related problems arise in the study of null geodesics of stationary spacetimes, and show how the new perspectives which arise are of interest both in the study of stationary spacetimes, but also in the field of Finsler geometry.
