DY2W03 - Modeling, observing and understanding flows and magnetic fields in the Earth's core and in the Sun

In this talk I will review some of the theoretical issues facing dynamo theorists in explaining the origin of large-scale magnetic activity in the Sun and other solar-type stars. I will stress that the theoretical obstacles here are somewhat different from those that keep the geodynamo community awake at night. Having given a brief introduction to the theory of turbulent statistical dynamos, I will review the various “cartoon” scenarios for solar dynamo action. I will finish by suggesting that a way forward may be found in “Direct Statistical Simulation”, though several theoretical and computational hurdles remain to be addressed.
