Topological Insulators: New Phases with a Twist

Topological insulators are a new class of band insulators with topological order. They were originally discovered in the context of a spin version of the quantum Hall effect. The quantization of spin currents is not however a characteristic feature of these,rather, it is the existence of edge states which are robust in the presence of small perturbations which preserve time reversal symmetry. In three dimensions I will show that a novel class of topological insulators which have no quantum Hall analog is possible. Recent experiments on bismuth antimony alloys and other materials seem to indicate that this novel phase is realised in these materials.
