Abstract
After a look to the start of soil mechanics and some important historic benchmarks, a view about the characteristics uncertainties in geotechnical engineering is presented. How good we are? For the present-day popular topic of heat transport and storage in soil, serious limitations of standard simulation techniques is outlined, as an example. Some suggestions are provided how in the context of a modern critical society to coop with the typical aspects of soils and its engineering. How long we shall last?
